According to her is a drama following Veronica, a young Russian woman who happily gives up all prospects of a brilliant career as a pianist in order to raise her son. Veronica’s choice while supported at first by her husband Paul, a New York stockbroker, slowly erodes her social status among Paul’s highly ambitious circle of friends.
Paul’s cousin, Adele, who as a French bourgeoise exudes a highbrow affectation that alienates as much as it charms, is the storm that threatens to uproot Veronica. A high-end executive with a brilliant career and a child at a distant boarding school, Adele rails against Veronica’s choice of putting motherhood first.
Centered on her son, Veronica fails to make friends and becomes more and more isolated in the airtight French expatriate milieu while not having the time and language skills needed to step into the wider world.
The situation intensifies when Amanda, a successful and charming French pianist, arrives for a concert tour in New York and falls for Paul.

Swamped by the audience reaction to her debut feature film According to Her at the 47th International Film Festival of India, French-born film director and screenwriter, Estelle Artus, was quite relieved as she confessed that she didn’t know what to expect from an Indian audience prior to the screening. “I was not sure whether the audience here would relate to my film,” she said, addressing the audience and fielding questions on her film, which is running in the International Competition category at the festival.
Contrary to Artus’s fears, According to Her was a complete winner with respect to its universal appeal, delving into the life of a successful pianist Veronica, who happily gives up her career to embrace motherhood and raise her son.

Pascal Yen Pfister, the lead male in According to Her, has been cast in Clint Eastwood’s Sully.
Veronica is a bit like the character of Jurieu in Jean Renoir’s The Rules of the Game: she is the outsider, the one who disturbs a social microcosm. More than everything else, it’s the language that makes her foreign. This is why I choose to have three languages in the film. Renoir also took risks when he gave its lead role to Nora Gregor. He chose her because of her accent (she was Austrian). In According to her, Veronica speaking Russian to her son is ‘what separates’. What ‘brings together or separates’ is at the core of my film. Of course it echoes what I saw not so much in New York, but in France, where segregation is a matter of culture and language more than in any other country in the world.
Special thanks to actor Jean François Poirier for joining our cast.
As we watch Veronica’s emotional threads unravel, we witness a tale of a woman in conflict, torn between practicing her art, bonding with her child, and pleasing those around her. It’s an impossible task, one that weighs heavily on this story’s protagonist and causes the viewer to reflect on her own life choices in a deep thought-provoking way.

According to Her in Cineuropa featuring Pascal Yen-Pfister, Nathalie Bryant, Vincent Verdi.
Watching it, I discovered a wonderful sensation that I seldom experience in films. It’s one of being a complete outsider in a world in which you are deeply immersed. It’s a feeling that no matter what you’ve done, no matter where you are, you are not of that place.
Chris Garcia’s review in Klaus at Gun Point.
A lot of people don’t realize how much in the dark a director is at the beginning of filming. It’s like sailing by night in high seas, you don’t see anything and everybody relies on you. What makes a director is not that he or she gives direction, it’s the ability to step in the dark and find a path while giving others a feeling of security.
Interview in Agnes Films.
Being in upper class New York, our characters are destined for success. Our heroine is expected to be a mother while maintaining a brilliant musical career and her slim figure. Motherhood can and should be greatly assisted by nannies and boarding schools, while the physical and financial expectations are impossible to avoid.
